Valentine

by Amanda Conlogue

I'd always hated it
when friends would say
you find your hearts
desire when least expected
I'd fume and scoff
alone

and when I met you
I wasn't expecting much
I'd doomed our meeting
to a one date wonder
of exchanged pleasantries
and awkward silences

I watched you walk
up the drive, slowly
as if on a sunday stroll
hands in pockets
you looked up
caught me peeping
from the window

you smiled
such a sweet smile
gentle innocence
and I knew that
the night would be
full of promise

hopeful
I took your arm
stepped out into
the cold evening air
a fine mist of rain
settling over us
dampening nothing

and again, tonight
a fine mist settles
over us, as we stand
within the circle
of a lamp post's light
and whisper goodnight
in the cold evening air

a year gone by now
and I still feel
the promise
of your smile
the promise
in your kiss

I can't hold you
close enough
long enough
I can't get enough
of those kisses
or express how much
I love you with words

you are my one
true Valentine.
