Monologue: The Enchantress

by J. P. Davies

In searching for myself, I found her. She, who sparkles as to a million stars, a maiden of unsurpassed beauty, whose very visage was want, to set my knees a tremble. I happened upon her as she was frolicking in starlight in the forest of Bruhendahir. Now by its very nature the forest was a solemn and disenchanting place at the best of times. But as her raven hair reflected the glow of the stars to my sight, the forest seemed the most ethereally fair place I had ever encountered. Now, as it happened, I was enraptured upon the sight of her dance, and was frozen in place as still as a statue. I then, for I had no other option, observed her full lips spread into a smile at the sky and she began to sing a song not fit for mortal man to hear. It soared above my very dreams, to a place far beyond my thought. The song was of a nature to which I could not understand the words, but being caught amidst her enchantment, visions began to spring into my mind as to what her conveyance entailed. She sang of truth in the ever streaming waterfall, of hope in the scent of flowers, of love in the cool breeze that sweeps down a mountainside only to caress your face with memory. I watched, as she sang this song not meant for me to hear, and as the final notes drifted away into the pale light of this still nighttime I found my voice at last. I called to her, "Oh fairest of Earth's creatures, do not cease your song. It gives me hope beyond all hope." She spun around, startled at my intrusion, and with the agility of a deer she raced off into the woods. I pursued her until my breath came in ragged gasps from my throat. But, I never found her. I wandered that wood for a year, calling for her. But she never heeded my call. So, I managed to make it out of that forest. I trudged aimlessly through the wild searching for some semblance of her beauty. And that is what brings me here on this cool September evening, still alive, but empty without her.
