the moon rose and set like the sun

by Emily Davidson

the moon rises every night and sets in the morning, you know.
i don't think it's fair that people don't talk about
moonrises or moonsets.
i feel sorry for the moon sometimes.
doesn't it get lonely?
the sun has clouds to be friends with,
and birds,
and treetops.
the moon only has darkness and the stars,
and the stars are lonely, too.

i think i am like the moon.
i am silently rising and setting in the background.
and when the sun explodes
all you'll have is me
but maybe by then
i'll have made friends with the stars.

Author's Note: this was originally written as vignette, and i tried to change the form to poetry. i'm not sure how well i did it.
