There's Still a Missing Peace (political poetry challenge)

by Mainon A Schwartz

Several million pieces, marketed and sold in stores

(they all have faces; weÂ’ll never

            know their names)

[Who recognizes a ManufacturerÂ’s design?]

Several million pieces, targeted and sold in wars

            (politicians willing to cut off

            corners to fit the frames)

Religious fervor in the upper right

            Nationalism in the lower left

[Borders have become indications of jigsaws]

(how do we integrate the images?)

(how do we separate the sides?)

Identities in the first quadrant

            Cultures in the second

(poverty waits unnoticed, in the fourth)

[International law along one axis, or two?]

Capitalism in the foreground

            Imperialism in the back

(inequity sits unnoticed, in plain view)

Mad, sad competitions; mad, sad politicians

(the clock is ticking off centuries, and theyÂ’re

afraid the next election will come too soon)

[maybe the puzzle just isnÂ’t there]

They ignore the causations, but speak of cessations

(maybe the puzzle just isnÂ’t theirs

                              to solve or rearrange)

Author's Note: Testing the merits of political poetry-- there's discussion on the General thread about this. Does this cease to become poetry-- or "good" poetry-- because it's political? Comments welcome.

Hi Mainon, It's good. That's probably just about right. Specially about the politicans only out for what they can gain for themselves, the heck with the rest of the other people. It's good to have them. Not everyone will agree. but it can or will let people know how or where ya really stand on something. Whether they agree or not or like it or not. We have that Freedom, be ever so thankful.

no, it doesnt cease to be 'good' poetry, i find it remarkable. besides you can always take different takes on any piece of poetry. political or not.

"(maybe the puzzle just isn’t theirs to solve or rearrange)" - great conclusion to this piece. I really enjoyed this as the political aspect is not overpowering...blatently opinionated. What I mean is that your tone is soft and questioning, and your words nice and subtle for such a subject. Very good work in my view! :-)
