goodbye, independence

by Emily Davidson

graphite like
blood writing
words that
could drain
a heart
and empty
a mind;
words that
could bend
truth and
fragment reality
all for
one last
goodbye
to a stronger ground
and to
independence
is why i can sleep
alone
at night
i can almost hear the
telephone ring
but i answer and
i'm dreaming
of your lips on my
neck and your hands on my
waist and our bodies askew
and the world will
spin
with me under a chandelier
on a freshly waxed floor
and our knees will
touch
me and remember how it's
all for
one last
goodbye
to a stronger ground
and to
independence.
