Fire

by Kalikala Smith

We are fire
and we burn from these street lights
to show what little we can
of how our world is dying.
We are broken
and we bear the burden of
each other's lonely hearts
until we don't even know ourselves.

Time
can't cure this.
Time
can't break this.

I know the feeling hurts sometimes
I know the pain is too much to bear
and we're severed at our hearts tonight
do we even have enough room to care?

We are fading
and the light that burned so hard
is now a black coal
and we don't even know ourselves.
We were saving
our last bit of strength
for this moment
to burn.

Please don't take my fire
for once in my life
I have it for myself.
Please don't take me any higher
I'm afraid to look down
and see that I'm not there.

And we burn ourselves by candle-light
its the only thing that we can stand
and we hate ourselves when we burn bright
we burn.
(we are fire)
