See us fall by Karen MichelleThe pressing of
the midnight sun
holds us here,
waiting for an
undercurrent.
Stapled into this
illusion, we bathe
in fluorescent love -
lips, hands, arms, fingers
heads, shoulders, knees
and toes
(knees and toes).
The safest part of me
is the furthest from
your grasp and I
graze my elbows across
your ribs - counting
the missing link in
our late night creation.
In my open mouth,
I hold the lunar satellite
and press the stars
between my teeth
and tongue.
This universe was made
for mass consumption
but we deconstruct
the spaces between
matter and anti, stretching
and stitching them into
carbon copies of
familiarity.
These are the nights
we search for truth
in burnt out hurricane lamps.
You press your ear
against the wall
and I force my eye
to invade another keyhole
but we were never quite
adept at deciphering
artificial promises.
Adam was a loner,
praying for salvation;
Eve was his comfort food,
and source of devastation.

| Posted by Philippa Jane on 01/19/04 at 07:16 AM All of this is just.. wow. Alicia and I had discussed how you manage to nail the conclusions of every piece you write, time after time after time - it's a real gift. I loved every stanza of this (the fourth in particular), but that final stanza floored me. |
