To Be Precious

by Alison McKenzie

A single gulp of
Cool water
In the heat of high noon
God I would
If my river ran once

The magic of
A wishing star
Streaking across the bleak
Midnight sky
Offering glory in the darkest hour
God I would
If my eyes held even the reflection
Of hope

The pristine melody
Of a baby’s first giggle
Sparkling string of drool
Falling onto happy breasts
God I would
If my soul hadn’t been amputated
During cupid’s last surgery

The tears that fall
From lover’s eyes
That look of adoration
The sacrifice made when someone
Anyone
Truly cherishes another
God I would
If my heart could see
Beyond crumbling stone

For someone to miss my face
For someone to think of me
Once
And to have that thought warm them
Always
To be precious
If it wasn't the man in the moon
God I would
Savor the tiniest morsel
