Ah, Teenage Conformity

by Trisha De Gracia

They love to clump
in safe, shrieking groups that feed off one another's brilliances,
(brilliance being the ability know what you should close your ears to.
Notice how ears aren't meant to close?)
and misfortunes
(misfortune being, of course,
wrong lipstick choice for that particular tuesday,
plus the nerve to wear it anyways).

We think we're getting somewhere
when the girls dye their hair
and put spikes in their clothing
but really it's just the fascinating evolution
from white sheep
to white-tinted-red sheep.
(get the picture?)

Conformity
by united non-comformity
and the shunning of all that is "mainstream"
for all that isn't
is precisely everyone's idea
of individualism,
and you don't evade this problem
when everyone jumps in the same convertable
and not the bandwagon...

Author's Note: I don't think you can be a 15 year old poet without touching on this topic. I went to a pals birthday and was reminded very clearly why I've never had too many girl-friends. They're mean.
