Monologue: Look At The Stars

by J. P. Davies

Just look at the stars. Don't they just remind you just how feeble we are? A people staggering around, looking inwards and downwards. Never upwards. Every night I look for the first star in the sky. It lets me know just how insignificant I am. Because when I'm gone, that star will still be there for someone else to look at and wonder. If it takes three-hundred years for the light from that star to reach your eye and you are only likely to live just past eighty, the light of that star is over three times your existence. And if that star were to explode you would never live to see it disappear. It would still be there shining for your grandchildren in their old age. You see that's what I'm talking about. We are all so concerned with our educations, our jobs, and our relationships, that we fail to recognize that our existence is the blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things. We are so caught up in our own problems that we never sit down and appreciate things greater than ourselves. That star is more important to this universe than you and I will ever be.

Author's Note: "Look at the stars, don't they remind you just how feeble we are." Is a quote from the song "New Deep" by John Mayer.
