On the heels of God

by Scott Cadence

I saw myself in your eyes today
In tears

I saw reflections of the mind
Like in scales of fish
Opalescent and murky -
light bouncing within it
causing wonderment

It was the spark of consideration
Of weighing the importance -
And by the lack of words between us
as I drove you home,
Through the sounds of just the car moving
over the pavement -
I think we both saw a new version of ourselves

To face two mirrors on each other
Where all the dimensions meld
the soul is neither inner nor outer
the mind is broken down into fragments -
A collection of memories
of words
of gestures
of expressions
of Emotion –
All just keepsakes

And where were you behind it all ?
Where was I?

I realized how fragile we are
to such clarity,
Through the filters of your mind
My self-perceptions’ flimsy layers
Were pealed

I haven’t turned around in a while
To see the path behind me -
I’ve been so busy
Planning every step ahead –
My soul is feverishly stumbling
Quaking in the struggle for identity
Of constant validation
In the push for progress
I forgot the serenity in stillness
Where I met you

That place to go when you’ve given it all away
Where questions of insecurity don’t linger at every sentences’ end
Where you don’t have to wonder if I still love you
Where streets welcome silent cars to roll
Where you can hear the footsteps of God
Not far behind

Keep flickering... wonderful images that helps the reader to realize the need to re-prioritize and keep in mind the things that are most important in this life. Very well done.

It makes me want to stop and take a breather. Beautiful piece of art!
