Mugging the Muse

by Jon-Jacob F Deal

I imagine him
As a burly Gingerbread Man;
We meet for beer at that dive--
You know the one, on the corner of
Heart and Mind
He gets me drunk on inspiration
Then says he has to run;
Says he's got no dough,
But it's been real
And would I mind picking up the tab
Again?
He proffers a crispy hand
I force a grin, but as we shake
I whip out my best mental jiujitsu
And rip his frigging arm right off;
I'm still gnawing on it
When I pay our bill
And leave.
