The Toast

by Charles J Hannan

Raise your glass and drink
Drink to the masses of people without
Without homes to live or food to eat
Those souls under the overpass
Freezing to death

Drink to the fact that you're able to sit down and read this
To respond in a manner so you chose
With slippers upon your feet
Coffee or tea
A warm bed near

Drink to the soldiers dying every day in a most hostile enviroment
Were anyone could be wired to explode
Putting life on the line just hanging around
Brave isn't a big enough word

Lift your glass and drink
Drink to your family on every occasion
For this is your blood and heritage
A Godsent
Your purpose

Drink to our friendship as poets in a great society
To lend a hand to each other and keep supreme company
The beautiful thoughts and intriguing writ
Such talent swirls like wind in here

Don't drink and drive
