new year's eve

by Nanette Bellman

it started back in September
you knew but never said a word
you told us the basic story
but left the worst unheard

now it's late December
Christmas come and Christmas gone
the good from bad to worse
so we'll sign another song

the night we got a call
things weren't really clear
we obeyed to what was said
it was our biggest fear

it started with a phone call
it ended the same way
kind of a surprise
there's nothing we can say

i'll never forget the day
the day you had to leave
what a way to say
happy new year's eve
