filtered memories of a non-adult life

by Stephanie Myers

reflections in the backdrop where
the peter pan identity plays, the
drip-drop of the non-leakable faucet
deafens the stillness departing.

chimes of children's happiness paint
the walls surrounding an encumbered time
still mirror of a playful habitual habitat

where did they go?

long lost memories that filter
through a grown up adult attitude
forgotten the shoes un-tied and touseled
hair, runny nose chalantly cleansed with the
arm sleeve of a winter coat, tripping and falling,
scraping knees while they all point and laugh until
hero becomes "best friend forever" helping with
an outstretched hand.

times have passed entering the age to jump onto the
responsibility wagon never to fall off per
superglued bottom to seat.

reflections never left-
hanging about with the peter pan
identity silently for one single moment
to burst in like firecrackers in the
bathtub.

just a moment to escape its imprisonment
with the 9 to 5's, weekend errand running,
spring cleaning, grocery shopping, bills,
birthdays, holiday's, and presents.

all this for a bowl of ice cream for breakfast.

Mmhmm... I sorta sit back every once in a while and think "Geez, wasn't I a kid just the other day?" A really wonderful poem, sparking memories and full of images that are so easy to identify with. Using the reference to Peter Pan is a really nice touch.
