self-dignity: over-rated and undersung by Rachelle Howehello again.
you don't know my name,
though you know my thighs,
and i'm okay with that.
there will be other days
for you to rape and pillage,
other spoils to
tip over and drown.
there will be other girls
to wrap your fingers around,
throats to squeeze,
sentences to unravel.
there will be virginities to take
and secrets to spit upon
and trusts to smash.
there will be many days
where you can sell your mother,
your soul, and her dignity.
you already pawned mine.
and that's okay.
because i pushed my roots upward,
and told the sun to swallow.
i've grown
beneath your shadow
this whole time, and
you'd never know it:
(you'd never know
what you were stepping on
until it broke your leg.) 12/19/2003 Author's Note: daniel rollings. mmm. go read him. now. he's brilliant. and the inspiration to this piece. in a good way. he gave me a line, i ran with it. as per usual. you guys know how i am.

I am not usually taken to quoting scripture but that seem to fit. Excellent images that twist around a broken leg. |
