song for a shadow [villanelle]

by Indigo Tempesta

The lamp outside is gleaming grey
Through the haze of winter sunrise,
Dwarfed by the coming of the day.

You said the things you needed to say,
Then turned and whispered with your sighs:
"The lamp outside is gleaming grey."

I offered you a sunbright ray
But you only thought to close your eyes
Dwarfed by the coming of the day.

You're silent unless you're far away,
I think as I see with some surprise
The lamp outside is gleaming grey.

I'd hold you always if today
Was the alpha and omega of our lives
Dwarfed by the coming of the day.

You and I have such a way
Of burning hot until we realize
The lamp outside is gleaming grey,
Dwarfed by the coming of the day.

Hi, your title intrigued me and I also love villanelles. Very poignant and descriptive. Excellent use of this form also, really good poem.

Shadows are hard to catch, but you've done it here and became a nice read.
