Everyday After

by Scott Cadence

There are a thousand sounds and emotions
that fill up the day –
tones disarranged
hidden from words,
every note is a trigger to remind me
of the life you owe

My mother made this skin
tough enough to keep the blood in
but just shy of keeping you out
from the rivers underneath
where you have become inseparable
from my being

It seems you have the better part
of knowing me inside out,
my morning stretch
the blind trips to bathroom because I can never remember
to set my glasses on the night stand -
all my strength and weakness

You only remain in scraps of time
like when I taught you how to catch a moving train
because we never could arrive on time,
how we would tip toe out onto the neighbor’s harbor
where our feet would dangle
moving the water into laughter
the light catching in the waves
in long strands of hair
now only shine in a comb, -
the smell of you
on bed sheets
everywhere
today
tomorrow
yesterday
in a crowd
your voice,
will I ever stop looking?

I have all the words
all the ones we think time will allow
round up for you –
and not the power of a thousand choirs
or a million poets
composed and eloquent
could reach you
like the whisper you
anchored in me

there is no measurement to expose
how much you are missed

Such a powerful ending. The sense of loss and the extent you are willing to go in order to communicate with those who have gone on. Great words that bring powerful emotion to the reader.
