Experimental

by Karen Michelle

It's been days since we've touched the sun together.

We are moments away
from falling apart
in these minutes
before midnight
and tonight, no words
escaped from the grasp
of your red mouth.

You chewed your bottom lip
as though contemplating
a soliloquoy;
But ultimately, your mind
was closed and we remained
stagnant in this separation
of bodies and hearts.

I only write of you
when my heart bleeds
into itself, it seems,
even though I want to
pour this six year
calm out onto the page.

So let me leave you with
the satisfaction that
even with this lump
in my throat, I can
close my eyes and recall
every fleck in your eyes,
every smile and every ounce
of intensity in your gaze.

We are together, even
in the distance you
pave and slice between us,
even in the moments
between sight and sound.
