In the Quiet Hours (Rejection without Valor)

by Alison McKenzie

In the quiet hours
I heard the beating of my own heart
Crying out to no one
Breaking in the silence

In the quiet hours
Countless tears fell down my face
While you lay next to me
Sleeping in the silence

In the quiet hours
I shivered in the endless cold
That surrounded you
Freezing in the silence

In the quiet hours
All alone though you lay with me
I've been drifting
Dying in the silence

In the quiet hours
Angels came and took me away
But you weren't watching
Blinded by the silence

In the quiet hours
You turned to find only my ashes
And soon
A wind blew them away
Swirling in the silence
Dancing in the silence
In the quiet hours

Author's Note: This is a poem I wrote when I knew the marriage to my kids' dad was ending. He never hit me. He rarely screamed at me. His tactic was to freeze me out. It worked. Lucky for me, my ashes found themselves, reunited, and here I am. :-)
