Alive in the Ocean

by Alison McKenzie

Like an ocean
You rush in
Grand waves
Of dangerous proportions
Sweeping me off my feet
Forcing me to hold my breath
I tumble beneath your surface
Not knowing which way is up
Until I am certain
I will drown,
That death is surely only seconds away…
At the last possible moment
I manage to come up for air
Gasping, heart pounding
In awe of your power
But grateful to be floating
In your embrace
And then,
With great measures of gentleness
Which equal only your ferocity in force
You deposit me sweetly
On the shores of your sand
While you recede
More and more away
Into a place more like dreaming
Where I wonder what was real
And what was only wishes

"Where I wonder what was real And what was only wishes"... what great final lines... this one got me thinking... that's what good poetry should do :)
