Nostalgia

by Teri T Lahmon

I remember
the first magic I ever learned
of how to unlock strange shapes
next to pictures
that made images dance in my mind
I remember the first dish I ever cooked
you ate those burnt eggs like they were
gourmet delicacies
thousand year old duck eggs
priced hundred dollars a plate
I remember
my first Lord's Prayer
The warmth of your pillow
the tragedy of my baby uncle
tears you wiped away
whippings so richly deserved
teacakes with milk
biscuits with tomato gravy
I remember
with words
you taught me to write.
