Anticipation by Amanda J CobbI'm writing this in cursive,
and I never write in cursive.
I write in my chicken-scratch hand,
with lines and arrows and black marks
covering the inches of the page.
But as I sit here,
pen whirring over the lines,
I instinctively write in cursive
because I don't want
the unknown minds around me
to receive this yet,
unfinished and vulnerable as it is.
Anticipation is everything, he says.
It just makes what you've waited for better.
And I choke on my own words
as they're slammed in my face,
elegant, right-handed script
mocking and hypocritical
in it's curved and flowing strokes.
No certainty, only an unclear page -
just lines and lines,
stretching endlessly, it seems;
running parallel, but never merging.
Just beautiful, lonely words.
Yes, anticipation is everything -
if it never ends.
When it never ends. 12/04/2003 Posted on 12/04/2003 Copyright © 2025 Amanda J Cobb
