Sanctuary by Bet Yeldemi cut myself to make you
bleed from candlelit chasms
hemophiliac nightmares
lazy feathers suckling cotton
Sanctuary rising below
consciousness suspended
above a burning field
of lavender and downy lace
don't say you don't
know me after the dawn
massive rush to concrete creation
race toward birth
through my lips you
sought faithless redemption
finding only bitter ashes, wine-soaked
soured by the voice
indelible in your throat
no matter how many messages you
float in bottles across the empty sky
you are not my salvation
12/03/2003 Author's Note: Thanks to Paul for commenting. The slideshow images are intentionally there to be stimulating to the brain, but confusing for the heart. It's representative of how the speaker feels, as if there are flashes of memories with every blink of the eye. Pieces of her showing through the encounter which brought the realization that the man who wanted her did not really love her. Maybe this one's more for me, but if approached analytically after several reads, it may yield greater understanding...then again, maybe it's too difficult to sort through because of the constant flashes...like the paparazzi who won't leave people alone.

Posted by Amanda J Cobb on 01/06/04 at 06:27 AM See, I on the other hand, will contradict Paul because I think the succession of images works wonderfully...maybe it's because I like stream of consciousness type presentations. I think the last full stanza (including the last line after) is particularly powerful. Good stuff. |
