my friend, the caterpillar.

by Olivia Weinkein

the miles were stretched out between us
and i promised you i could hold my breath
forever if it meant you could sleep better,
if it meant you could see yourself more clearly
than either of us ever could before.

baby it's so soft here after midnight when
everything but your soul is sleeping. i'm losing
my head remembering your accuracy of emotion.
and X marks the spot, doesn't it. we are built
from lack of sunlight in a world that is plentiful

of it but greedy and in constant need of approval
because it believes it isn't pretty enough to love.
and you ride that swift wave of understanding because
you have been there before. you know that the hand
that we hold today could reach up and slap us at

any time and because of this, i love you more than
words can rhyme. you are full bloom in Knowing.
and flower petals are so very beautiful in the rain.
spring is right around the corner and i am here,
holding my breath for you until you are ready to
be Awake.
