**topic* * i swim in the blood under your fingernails

by Kimberly Bare

you raked
through my life
like nails
into sweet flesh
taking
whatever i offered
with not a moments
regard

too soon
i reached out
to grasp
empty smiles
and
sorrowful sighs

i thought i could swim
in the blood
under your
fingernails

i thought you my
buoyancy

it seems i was only
drowning
all the while
