topic: look Death in the eye, and i dare you not to blink by Rachelle Howei have seen the belly of the beast.
i have seen armageddon and
the end of the world as it
whistles and sings hello dolly
to passers by.
you wouldn't know him.
his hat is sodden, his face is worn.
he's quite homely,
if you were to look him in the eye.
you wouldn't.
he might repulse you.
but what do you think Death sees?
certainly not the grand design.
no, that's saved for mortals and angels:
those who can be fooled
with shiny things and balloons.
we can be distracted.
we can be whispered to.
we can be soothed.
but Death cannot.
Death, that tortured soul,
is on the backs of humanity,
and i have seen him.
i have seen the world,
and it is beautiful
even in ruin. 11/25/2003 Author's Note: don't write with your eyes half closed. your soul might swallow itself in the aftermath. but i have, and here is my warning.
