from green to ground

by Emily Davidson

it's a quarter to six
as the sun sits comfortably
somewhere in the western sky.
to each footstep, its own rhythm.
to each breath, its own thought.

all the pavement surrounding
has the same negative temperature reading.
and all the beautiful seasons
have been skipped
and the leaves just go
from green to ground.
