boys

by Emily G Myers

boys
boys
not men
writing
in red
pen
men-
struation
why not
womenstruation,
right, koye?
we're not
different
black / white
boy / girl
sexism
is as bad as
racism
& you draw
women as
breakfast
machines
& say girls
don't have
deep conversation

he sat and
asked why
no girl
wanted him

maybe it's
cause you
say shit
like that

Author's Note: for as long as I can remember, I've been put down by boys. it's neverending. and for some reason lately the boys around me have been giving their gender a bad name. with this poem, I'm not trying to attack all boys. no way... two of the people that I love most in this world are boys. but occasionally I'll come across some boys who say they're inherently better than girls, or girls are just for cooking, or some other inane something. and today it just went too far. so this is in response to them. for more on this subject read this from November 18.
