topic: counting your eyelashes

by Rachelle Howe

it was your eyes that drew me in.
you suckered me, and i allowed it.
i would not be here if i
did not want to be, and you think
you hold some power.

you are mistaken.
i will show you the errors,
i will show you the "does not exist anthem"
you seemed to live by.
what you don't see
can hurt you.
learn that. love it.

you were so beautiful
but only between
your chin line and hairline.
the rest of you i
could, and have, dismissed.
the rest of you was irrelevant.
is irrelevant.

but your eyes are not.

they very much mean something.
they are the vocal chords of humanity,
to me, they sing in opera and reggae,
they sing to me of all the years you spent
hiding underneath a bed,
all the times you didn't
want your father to see.
all the things you kept hidden.

all the things, all of them,
they sing.
they give you away.

i wanted to take you into my folds,
digest every remnant and splice.
every piece and thing that you held dear,
i wanted to clutch to my breast
and hum some foul tune.

i am not at all crazy.
they say that i am a vile creature,
that there is something wrong
with my brain patterns and way of life.
but my life is beauty, don't you think?
everyone should live here.
it is much better to be dead.
but i chose you, dear, and
you are having a hard time accepting it.
you must, at some point or another,
realize that your damning note was your eyes.
those lashes,
the black hearted pretties i now pick off,
one by one.

Eerie and dark and tingly. Weird mix for great words in a spectacular verse.

What can I say about this without losing my grip on reality? This is...is...God knows what this is. Take the word phenomenal and multiply it by a million.

Oh my, I looked through a few of yours at random and chose this as my favorite so far-- yes dark, but witty, a great title, and ending. There is an "Avenger" episode(do you know it, British series, 60's and on I think) where one released criminal is cutting up a photograph of the woman he wants revenge upon... and they piecing it together like a puzzle, etc. Quite fantastic photography in it too. Snip nip. Somehow this came to mind I think, as her eyes were featured, with lovely long lashes, and your poem is also so wonderfully visual.
