You always were

by Amy Niggel

You always were
the fearless one
the smartest one
the bravest one.
You walked out first
to see the world
and report to the rest of us
what it held.
You spoke first
and listened always.
And now you move first again.
You become what we all long to
and yet are afraid to admit.
You become more than yourself
more than a girl
more than a woman.
You become wife
and mother.
The future of us all.
You always were the fearless one.
