Refuge

by Jane E Pearce

When yesterday outshines today,
that is where I dwell-
among the golden jewels of time
when you were a Paris dandy,
and I was your Madamoiselle.
Those loving years so long ago
are emblazened on my brain
when we greeted every season
dreaming along the Seine.

Soon the storm clouds gathered,
troops with hate on their breath,
hunting down all the Semites
for shipment to camps of death.
One day, you were missing
from our usual trysting place,
and I knew they had taken you-
that we'd had our last embrace.
Over the years I remember
oh, so very well,
when you were a Paris dandy,
and I was your Madamoiselle.
