capsizing

by Olivia Weinkein

when more than ice begins
throbbing through my veins
then i will know

i have gone far enough.

and everyone wants to bleed a lover.
everyone wants to make a non-believer
believe in just about
anything. everyone wants to find a way
in to something that has no doors, no
windows.
everyone
just can't leave well enough
alone.

i am not everyone but
i have gone far enough.

and the person who can't breathe words
curses the poet who can.
and the person who can't be alone
haunts the person who lives in the
shadows and then something breaks.

something startles.

the world tips, spins in a new direction.
birds fly north for the winter.
and the rain rises from the ground
and begins falling instead
on heaven.
