"Never" is a Very Big Word

when you weigh all five letters,
and all of the meanings
and implications.
The finality of it all.
"Never" should never be used lightly.
"Never" is when the sum of what "Was"
what "Could be"
and what "Might be"
collides with the tangled fear and doubt
revolving in your head.
It spins and churns and
whether you like it or not
you end up with this big black hole
that is "Never" and all
you can think of
is how much you wish
that "Never" could be "Maybe"
or "Might" or
"If Only..."
Ya, you start to wish for "If Onlys."
If you know what I mean
then you know
without a doubt
that
NO ONE EVER WISHES FOR "IF ONLYS."
E V E R .
That's just the raw truth of it.
Those revolting two words don't let you see
what's ahead of you
or right with you
or whats standing right on your toes.
They blind you and bind you
and it takes a good long time
before you realize that "If Onlys" don't pay the bills.
"If Onlys" don't put food on the table
nor do they make you a homecoming Queen.
"If Only" can't do you're essay
can't wash the dog
can't flirt the milkman,
nothing.
"If Onlys" are worth
ZERO.
NADA.
NOTHING!
But "Never,"
"Never" means something.
"Never" can mean everything.
"Never" makes you wish for "If Only"
and that's huge.
Because when you wish for "If Only"
you "Never" get it,
and when "If Onlys" arise
because you "Never" get
what you could get "If Only..."
then this vicious cycle starts.
We all know about vicious, self-power eating cycles.
Right?
I'm not saying don't ever
use "Never."
I'd never mean that...
Only that you can't ever know when
"Never" is an "Ever" in disguise
(That 'N' can be tricky.)
"Ever" is not "Now."
It may not be "Tomorrow"
or "Next Week"
or "Once upon a time..."
then again,
it "Might" be,
but that, kids, is not of importance.
What is important is that
when you take "Never,"
Open someone elses jaw,
and put it inside
you might just be crowding the
"Ever"
that's lurking somewhere in the pit of their stomach
causing that sick feeling
and wrenching to get out,
because "Never..."
I mean, come on
