brittany

by Emily G Myers

'do you have a cigarette?'
[and can I make your day?]

'no, I don't'
[and yes, you did]

& you say you thought about
my fingers
yesterday
as you dyed your
blonde
hair
brown

you laugh
& talk of irony
blonde & brown...
my life in your hair

you said
'I'm trying to quit this habit &
I know it's good to believe in something,
I just don't know what that is for me yet...'

yes, it is good to believe
& I believe that
I don't really know you well,

but you saved my life today

Author's Note: I wasn't really planning to write one of these girl poems about Brittany. I don't even really talk to Brittany. She's a girl in my English class, and what I know of her, I've gathered from that class. She made a collage and said she was trying to quit smoking and that she wasn't quite sure what she believed about God and all that yet. But she always seems to amaze me, if not with what she says, then with how she says it. I think I like her so much cause I understand her. She holds her own in a debate, and I like that. Anyway, she complimented my poetry - one about me and Eric - and I just started writing this without knowing where it was going. This is where it ended up.

A nice poem Emily. Full of contradictions. Very cool

Yes, interesting contrasts. Thought-provoking.
