Lorna's Wigs by Philippa JaneOur teacher spoke of the identity
Lorna Simpson (lost then) found
in photography;
of Wigs and the correlation between
a woman's hair and self.
My class hypothesized: perhaps
Lorna despised her hair,
or cancer stole her locks,
or she worked in a salon
(her life braided into the
strands of others.)
But Lorna Simpson is (and was) an
African American woman, disadvantaged
by her curves, her shadows -
not to mention her hair's
character.
Yet my younger peers could not
understand the significance of Lorna's
telling photograph - and I realized (again)
that with learning comes the reminder
of one's ignorance. 11/02/2003 Posted on 11/03/2003 Copyright © 2024 Philippa Jane

Posted by Maureen Glaude on 11/03/03 at 02:18 PM With a middle name of Lorna, plus as a cancer survivor I can really relate, but also with the point further on that it wasn't really the hair that was the issue. Well done, a photo would even add more, but not needed, the poem tells enough. |
