More Than A Soldier

by Jacki M Butler

I can't bear to turn on the tv

Watch the news when the soldiers are dying

I have too many friends in Iraq

Everytime i hear of a bombing

Anything where our men are dying

My heart lurches and then stops for a second

My worst fear is that a name will come across

And that will be the name of a loved one

My soldiers are out there fighting for us

And losing their lives for our freedom

I love them for that, but in all honesty

I want them to come home where they belong

They have family and friends

Who know them as men and women

Know that they are smart and strong

More than just a soldier

So to my soldiers in the war

Take care

We miss you

Come home soon.

Author's Note: This is for Chris, Matt, Josh, AJ, Bernie, Holly and for all of our friends and loved ones that may be fighting right now for our freedom in Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba and whereever else they may be, and to my dear friends who have already come home safe and sound. God be with you and keep you safe. I love you.

Its so hard to think about losing a loved one over there, my brother is over there and everyday I hope that he is ok. my brother's close friend just came back injured badly. When we had the gulf war going on in 1991, I don't remember much, much of that becuase I was young but mainly I didn't know anyone close to me there, now in 2003 I will never forget this, its so scary, a lot of friends and relatives are there. Its so scary. You wrote a wonderful poem, thank you for sharing this!
