Whisper in the Reeds (A Contest Piece)

by Julie Adams

More than ever, I am running with the wind,
rocking, chopping, from jungle to sea
Amazon, wild, untamed river of a woman—
channeling into dreams, as sure as sunsets.

Each horizon compels me into new lands, borders
but I am running into the wind, kite in flight,
and reaching beyond. As the sun pulls away,
I tug on silver trails of moon-silk across waters, vast and wide.

I tread between marshes, mangroves, reeds,
Earth whispers between my toes, urging me on;
a woman in motion is something to see!
