Fire!

by Mary Ellen Smith

It licks the land and sets ablaze
every twig within its gaze
and doesn't care which way it leans
uphill or down, by any means.

Devouring homes and hearths alike,
a flash! Ever consuming strike,
the fire smiles its evil grin
exposing the melted heart within.

Riding the wind in thunderous waves
burning acres into graves,
the fire leaves charred trees alone
alas to write their own headstones.

Author's Note: The Southern California fires this week seemed to surround us all. My niece and her family were evacuated from their San Diego area home in the mountains near Julian. Their little town was saved....but the fire consumed so many many homes.

Indeed, glad you are safe and sound--well safe anyway. ;) You certainly have caught the intensity of the out-of-control deadly wildfires in CA with this descriptive personification.
