American Idle

by Robert Cameron Hazelton

Please don’t bug me, can’t you see
I’m living out my fantasy,
this glowing box enables me
to do it quite vicariously.

Sometimes I look inside my head
but all my thoughts seem to have fled
so I just lie here in this bed
watching my favorite show instead.

Such stark ‘realities’ they transmit-
I believe every word of it!
Remote concern is a prerequisite
in order to accept this shit.

Waiting to be told if I should care
or what cool fashions I can wear,
my life is lost in disrepair
as I sit and blankly stare.
