Diet

by Christina Gleason

I will lose ten pounds to begin,
the weight of the hair
on my shoulders, tangled
in familiar fingers,
then the fingers themselves
up to the elbows,
save a curled index
on the right hand
to trace the messy holes
of nose, eyes,
then smooth the face
and remove the ears.

Next the feet, the transport
of this girlish waste,
the bony ankles and
the well muscled
calves- and why not
the thighs? The stumps
balancing the hollow triangle
of pelvis and stomach,
and the breasts-
the plump woman of me
beside detached knees
and forearm.

Finally I will pare
down the thick of me,
the folded center,
the shameful curves.
and if I am worth
my weight in anything,
I'll give away my better parts.
