Under the Dock

by Siri Lipscomb

I see you in my mind’s eye

Untying the speedboat lines

Then stepping onto the dock

Reeling after the collision

Between that dock piling

And the soft place under your chin

Semi conscious perhaps but unable

To regain your senses

Or your equilibrium

The plunge into the river

Water churning with silt

And floating river reeds

Motor idling for departure

Was the water cold enough

To take your breath away?

Breathing when you went in

You kept inhaling but were

Breathing water

Had you forgotten how to

Recharge your gills?

Were you dropping like a

Broken arrow that has lost

Velocity and momentum,

Or did you float gently to

The bottom of the river

Under that dock

Coming to terms gradually

With your newest resting place

It was bright that afternoon

Sun piercing the water’s surface

My mind’s eye sees your

Embryonic euphoria

Was it as hypnotic as those

Sensory deprivation tanks you

Had such a temporary jones for

Way back when?

Did you feel the sunlight of

Amaya ~ that joyous non-deceipt

That shines through amber essences

To fan the flames discreet, and

Can you keep your deceits joyous now?

Did you even try to wake up

In that golden undulating womb?

Did you recognize the fork

In the road to heaven

Or see the tunnel of your past?

My mind’s ear hears your

Internal debate

Evaluating your options

Returning to the known

Or choosing the unknown

The next great challenge

Knowing I would approve

Wherever your path evolved

I respect and applaud your

Right to choose to take

The watery path less traveled

Though it left me without a voice

Or a heart or a soul

For awhile

Simply amazing. The subject and the way chosen to express these ideas is completely engrossing, and the flow and structure are exceptional. This deserves a "wow!"
