Opossums

by Amanda J Cobb

He says,
Opossums!
Opossums, it is,
big, hairy opossums
have lodged in my lungs,
choking my breath,
and in their death throes
are clawing my insides to shreds.

Opossums? I ask.

Well, yes, says he.
I would have said dingoes,
but they are not native to this area.
