Death's laugh at my romantic heart (Rework by Ariel Mackin)

by Aaron Howard

I feel it slide from it’s sheath
I feel wetness on my brow,
and I sink into the ground
dirt crawling on my skin,
like arachnids and velvet ants

Darkness closes this chamber taunting
me with his whisper of promise..
this personal demon of mine..
this life long with resentment.
lingering beneath the skin..

I never confronted my anger.
.so we kept distant paths..
but death..
He crossed my path daily.
sweeping away civilization
he’s been grand to know
humanity’s degradation..

He approaches.
I declare.
Spawn of the abyss, I dare you..
show to me a life
lower that mine…
He mocks me with a laugh…

A woman appears before me
who had been abducted
her arms and legs amputated
and one eye was sewn shut..
locked in a room.
with a tiny corner of a
dirty window high up
on a wall to look through..

her keeper wasn’t too cruel..
he just wanted a woman
to stick in it for the long haul
and did what was necessary
to keep her stationary

She fell in love with that man
her only form of contact with life
Even in death, he chides me
about having a romantic heart..
