would should could have been

by Aaron Blair

i cut my summer teeth on the bare skin of girls
like ripe peaches.
i gnaw at the marrow of their whispy bones.

this is the way we do things.

no one has to love anymore
because we have score cards where our hearts
would should could have been
had we not come out of our mothers without them.

dear aaron,
this is tingling & cutting at the same time. the imagery in it makes me want to scream & the depth & truth of it makes me want to cry. this poem is exquisite, a new favorite & a perfect pick for POTD.

I have read this site since 2003, and this is still the very best poem I've seen.
