topic: late night jesus

by Rachelle Howe

i am the chalkboard
and your nails have scaled
all the way down.
i've been broken on your jagged rocks,
captivated by the ethereal beauty you possess.
your words have scathed me, i've been scalded by
the hot water that flows from your mouth and teeth.
your tongue flicks, that sanguine serpentine quality,
each day passing tick by tick.

and you have altered my present
state of mind, each word and usage another fugue.
it's vague, the hypnotic interludes.
we have our own epilogue, each turning of
the pages opens a new chapter.
you've ended me, with a perfect quote.
i've squandered my late night jesus', those rituals and rights.
i will take a stand, regardless of the soapbox.
yours is higher, you know.

open my insides, they couldn't be more blue
than the red that you wear, that fiery lipstick.
you've adorned me, kept me as counterfeit for decades,
and i've been swept under the rug for the last time.

Author's Note: this piece was written with my eyes closed. it's quite liberating. you should try it sometime. oh, and the topic was given to me by the Chiles man! way to go, Joe!

The ending is fantastic; the whole thing is fresh and unique.

I don't think I can do much more than sit back and gape in awe at this (and the rest that you write). Your way with words and ideas is way up there with brilliance.
