Alone

by Aaron Howard

I listen to the babble of my neighbors.
Rattling on about what’s on TV and who said what in the election.
but you know,
it’s nice to see the human elements at work.
Sometimes you can see right through them to their most pure essence.
Fear.
Fear of being alone is a powerful thing.
Some people will do anything not to be alone.
People go out of their way to find someone.
Maybe not a lover, but more of a companion in life.
It’s a hard find.
One harder that any search for a soul mate you could find.

Abandonment is a taste still familiar with the back of my throat.
I taste it every time I look over pictures of the past, every time I hear the word mother and father.
Every time I look at someone else being happy.
