Death's laugh at my romantic heart

by Aaron Howard

I feel it sliding out of it’s sheath.
I feel the wetness on my brow, as I sink into the ground.
I feel the dirt crawling on my skin, or maybe that’s just fire-ant’s and spiders.
Darkness circles the room taunting me with his whisper of promise.
He taunts me so, this personal demon of mine.
This life long of built up resentment.
Lingering beneath the skin.
I never functioned well with anger.
We kept distant paths.
But death, death crossed my path on a daily occurrence.
Sweeping away villages and towns and cities.
It’s been grand to know some of humanity’s degradation.

He approaches… and I declare.
Spawn of the abyss, I dare you.. show me a life worse that mine.

He mocks me with a laugh…
It shows me a woman who had been abducted by a serial killer.
How he’d amputated her arms and legs.
He'd Sewn one eye shut and kept her locked in a room
with just a slight corner of the window to look out of.
He wasn’t too cruel to her.
He just wanted a woman who’d stick in it for the long haul…She eventually fell in love with the man.
Since he was the only form of contact she ever had with the outside world…Even in death, he chides me about having a romantic heart..

Strong imagery, impossible to escape. You're a master of the language, I'm learning.
