the planets want it this way, i say

by Olivia Weinkein

you say "the odds are against us" but love,
the odds have always been against us through
lifetimes before now when i first asked you
your moon sign and you found it hard to not keep
smiling.
and we will never make the mistake of ever sitting
too close to eachother because you know that once
i take your hand into mine, i will never let go.
it seems that some of these addictions we are simply
born with. the fires do not have to be fed to grow.
but
i am awe-struck by the embrace the planets
must have had on you when long ago two people
conceived you yet never dreamed you'd ever come this
far.

because now, here you are with such life in your eyes,
love. i can barely figure out what to do with it or if it
will ever be mine to do anything with. and nothing is ever
going to be able to make sense when it comes to you
and i so we needn't try. the world stopped watching us
lifetimes ago when i first asked you your moon sign.
and it stopped existing altogether when you in return
asked me mine.

I love the hope and longing presented in this piece... it is a wonderful little poem that speaks volumes.
