From the Book of Catastrophe

by Christina Gleason

Not with a bang but a whimper.
- T.S. Eliot, "The Hollow Men"

1. We could destroy the world
with our artist's hands
and our bare legs, mechanical
pencils drawing their grey lines
and shading the area between.

2. detonation (n) - a violent
release of energy caused by:

a couch today, tomorrow
a passenger's seat,
next week we will sit
on our hands.

3. I will write verses
with my feet on your thigh,
set tribulation into iambs,
rhyme hypernova
on your seams, creep
red moon and black sun
haiku onto your stomach.

4. Your tongue will draw
tsunamis dissipating into sunlight,
black holes turning white, the kings
of North and South as magnets,
in a polar embrace
on my neck.

5. see ill. 1 : a boy and a girl
averting their eyes and reaching
for the thing between them.

see ill. 2 : a boy and a girl,
a tiny mushroom cloud,
and the space between them gone.
